Alan grew up in Transcona and moved to the West end of Winnipeg in his teens. At a young age, Alan enrolled in Sea Cadets at the Winnipeg Division. His hobbies included sports and art. His passion was cartooning and illustrating. Alan Signed on with the Navy in the midst of World War II, as an under age seaman.
At just 18 he traveled to North Africa and many other foreign ports.
Turner Point on Kasmere Lake was named after him in 1989.
