James was stationed on HMCS Orillia from Jan 1941 until May 1941 when he was transferred to HMCS Alberni. He was then assigned on Alberni from May 1941 until January 1942.
Following his time on Alberni he attended anti submarine training and was on HMCS Assiniboine when they rammed U-210 in March 1943. It took a long time to fix Assiniboine after they were towed to Liverpool and he had various appointments in Britain doing anti-sub work, He ended the war in charge of training on the staff of Captain D at St. John’s. He left the navy after the war but re-joined in 1947. He spent most of his time in training establishments including Royal Roads.
